Moved

We're moved.. I was up until midnight last night setting up my studio... While not everything
that was packed is found, the new space is in working order. I'm sure I'll be very frustrated when trying to find that certain piece of "something" for a very particular muse... but all will be found eventually.
Jennifer is all set... and even holding painting classes - she said she's ordered new paints and
everything...
So, chick-er-roos, we'd love to hear from you. Just e-mail us here.

IT'S OFFICIAL

Our individual studios are now in our homes. Jen, Joyce & I will no longer be on 5th Street in Louisville. Our building has been leased to another business and we've been busy packin paints and fabrics and art - oh, my.. It's a biggggg change. But, a happy one.

We are keeping this blog... Still will be showing new "stuff" and encouraging you-all to keep being creative. We'll be doing a couple of shows and will let you know when and where. Here on the blog and by snail mail. I'm making over a vintage camper into a gypsy art wagon and will be taking my little bundles of creativity on the road.

Jennifer will still be teaching watercolor painting classes; so don't hesitate to contact us here - by e mail and/or comments on the blog. We just love hearing from all of you.

It's been a great year at 5th street studio and a great pleasure meeting you all. It's going to be some great fun this next year too, so don't loose touch.

As soon as we're unpacked and our home studios are in place, we'll be posting photos and stuff soon after. We've got some great HOLIDAY creations to share.

Until then.

Acrylic and Watercolor

Here is a new idea from my office : acrylic and watercolor, with a hint of ink, paper, and charcoal. I love the broody, fall feeling of this painting.

lol - Jennifer

More Great New Happenings at the Studio

Along with awesome Halloween and Fall projects are some truely inspired designs by Melody. Here is one of her Christmas Tree Photo Holders, and another reclaimed and altered stuffed animal - this time a bunny. I think they are soooo cute, and creative - I think I am going to have to take a class on how to make them myself (I already have designs on a raccoon and turtle. Hmmm.....how to alter those?!) Not only has Melody designed this darling christmas tree - but garlands, ornaments, paintings - it's amazing what has been pouring out of her office. As for myself - I have been working on beautiful little house ornaments which feature hand-painted watercolors, and some new acrylic/watercolor techniques which I hope to get finished before Saturday so everyone can see them. FUN FUN FUN.....I espescially like it when the three of us mavens (Melody, Joyce, and myself) are in the studio together and we can bounce ideas off of each other - and believe me - sometimes that really leaves a lot of glitter all over everything:)

Getting Ready for Saturday!

Here are some really great new designs by Joyce for the Fall! Aren't they great? They are the latest installments of 'Noodle-ology' Joyce has created for the studio. My own personal favorite is the witch - but the others are pretty 'wicked' as well. The chicken is also a new design she has made, inspired by a chicken her grandmother always had in her house. Something old, something new, something made of noodles that goes 'BOO'. The classes for this fall are going to be some of the most fun - we all can't wait to see you down at the studio.

OH my GoSh!!!!

Something NEW on the little-ole-horizon!! ANd for THosE of you that come on August 30...
We'll "spill-the-beans" .... We'Re excited and more excited... Here's a hint: it's bigger than a breadbox and is on wheels and Blinged OUT .. ?? See you on Saturday.

Reading

Summer reading? Yep! Just finished reading Amy Tan's Hundred Secret Senses... I read the book when it first came out, maybe 4 ys ago... Amy is one of my favs so re-reading was good, esp. since I seldom read fiction-novels. Needs to be pretty fast paced and involved.

I'm now reading The Art of Possibility by Ros Zander.... Good Book. I like positive thinking books that get me to strive to rise above. Rise above what? Hmmmm? Anyway, I'm asked ( a lot) where the "ideas", where the "creativity" comes from and I'd have to say by experimentation with my stash of stuff and from "you-can-do-it" books. I love Julia Cameron's book The Artist's Way;
which sounds like a book about Art, but really it's a book about positive thinking ... knowing who you are etc.... If you're into this kinda reading, I really recommend these.

See you soon

I Created an outline for you to follow - in re-vamping your bear - and I created a pattern for a witches hat and the crow. Hope you like her, I'll show pictures of the next before and after soon.
She's a re-claimed teddy that is now a gypsy .... I really like these remakes...kinda like the ones you see in fashion magazines that re-do women's hair, makeup etc. Yeah, right! All the teddy's will be on display during the special make-it-your-own on August 30th.. (see earlier post)

more picts tomorrow

and here's a photo of the same bear after....

Teddy Bear, teddy bear, turn-a-round; teddy bear, teddy bear, touch-the-ground...
I've been havin sooo much fun re-claiming tedds ... Here's a Before photo of a garage sale teddy

country store

TIMBERVIEW country store - literally out-in-the-country country store... Filled with birdhouses and handmade soaps, candles and plaques. What a great view too... You drive out past
Louisville (about a mile) and go west on hwy 66 (like you're going to Platte river state park)
and drive about 3 miles... Right by Platte river state park actually. Anyway, you turn into
this charming drive/lane and SURPRISE... there's the store, all snuggled into a re-vamped barn.
There's a chicken-coop-turned-greenhouse and a great grainbin-turned-birdhouse. Lots of
benches to sit-up-on and beautiful flower gardens loaded with butterflies and I counted three
different types of hummingbirds that fed from their feeders. You have to watch, or you'll
miss the turn-in to this great "farm country" store.

So, a day "out" with Timberview, Coop-de-ville & Feathers and, of course, 5th St. Studio & the Fairie Wood all within a couple of miles... Have an ice-cream at the old-fashioned soda-fountain at Blakes Drug Store and take in the Louisville Art Gallery.

New Watercolors

We are working on some new ideas (and yes, quite possibly some great new classes) at the studio. Now that school is getting close to being back in session (doesn't Aug 18 seem really early to you?) it is time to get cracking on some new projects. It feels really great to let my muse out to play again. She had summer-fever, but now is itching to get messy with paints, glitters, glue, and - well - you never know what next. That's the great thing about muses. August 30 (Saturday) is going to be fun at the studio - and you will be able to come in and preview new fall classes and see some samples of our new works. A great time to make some plans for a few of your fall evenings learning something new down at the studio (and don't forget all the fun and laughter that goes along with it).

Fab blog site

I love blogging - and accidentally surfed onto a new site called Barn House (I don't know how to link it here, so you'll have to google it - Barn House flea) and I really have "flea" envy... I'm hoping 5th street studio's annual spring (May) flea can be just as fun as theirs was.... Oh, the orginization, Oh, the fleavendors, Oh, the shopping! I want to drive to Washington just to shop the Barn House flea....

Hope you enjoy the site as much as I did. AND I hope it gives you big ideas for participating in the annual ARTflea we have here. Maybe we could have a flea during the Witches & Crones party Coop-de-Ville and 5th St. Studio are hosting OCTOBER 11th. ANY TAKERS??

ttfn Melody
p.s. will talk more about the W&C party later-but go ahead and start working on your "outfit".

Eco-Art or Altered Art??

The best way to stay cool, these past couple days, is to stay inside and work on somthin for the cold holidays... I am working on a re-claimed teddy bear for the Make it your Own on Aug. 30st.
OR should I call it altering a teddy bear for Make it your Own...?? There's also his friend the
bun, bun bunny.... she'll be a hoot, that's for sure.

AND for our "art-sistas" out there - You know who you are... We'd love love to have you do your own re-claimed plush animal and play show-and-tell at the Make it your Own. How about it??
Give us a call 402-234-3099 and let's play.

Some Fun Projects

Hey all you loyal blog fans out there! How are you doing? Hopefully your summer is going along fine - I can't believe it's almost time to get the kids back to school. We, at the studio, are gearing up for fall classes - and are having a great time doing it, too. Now that the full blast of swimming, gardening, grilling, playing, painting, creating, working on the yard and house, spending time with our awesome kids, and generally enjoying our summer is coming to a close we are really looking forward to what the late summer and fall may bring at the studio. It's time to reconnect with our other art mavens out there!

We always have classes available - just call up the studio, ask for a class - and if the date you want is free.....sign up! It's just that easy. These beautiful pop-art flowers of Melody's are a class, for example. Don't forget, I will also be available for "Stay-cations" with four classes: watercolor, bead-making, watch/bracelet making, and Fleurish boxes. That way, if you have a summer get-together with friends, pool party, or whatever - you can have your art and party, too. A nice way to bring art into your home. Give us a call, or better yet - come by the studio and see what's going on!

Joyce's Handbags

Here is another great 'ECO-art' project (and I know a lot of you have been eagerly awaiting these classes). Joyce has designed these two beautiful handbags made of recycled grocery bags and is almost done creating the pattern so she can start holding classes to teach all of us how to make them. They are so great! Stay tuned for her class availability - I have a feeling they will fill up fast:) Jen

Pop-Art by Melody

A wonderful art-sister of ours called our re-cycling of things into wonderful art "ECO-art" - and we thought that was the perfect name. Here is a grand sample of ECO-art using empty soda cans of all types. This class is taught by Melody, and is $15.00. You need to bring an empty, clean soda can, scissors, and white tacky glue. The paper, wire and beads are provided - as are the instructions on how to cut and mount the can - shape into a 'dress' and embellish. You may also want to bring a few colors of glitter which will complement your can. This class is very fun and easy to learn.

Don't forget -all you art mavens out there- that the second Saturday of every month is FINISH IT Saturday. This means if you have taken a class at the studio (or at a Stay-Cation) you may come in from noon until 4 p.m. and finish your project in the studio - or if you are making a new one and you need help or company - no charge, no registrations, just a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon with other art mavens and let your inner artist out for awhile.

Hello long lost friends!

Well, we promised we were working on something new for the summer, and I think I have found something fun for all: Stay-cation Art Classes. I will bring the art class to you and yours in the comfort of your own home. You can invite as many people you like (or will fit in your home) and I will come over, set up everything you need for the class you select, and teach! You can have your cake and paint it too! The classes I am offering (for now) as Stay-cations are my watercolor class and my Fleurish box class. If you have 6 people (including yourself) at the Stay-cation I will give you (the host) a 12-pack of my Twinkling H2O watercolors - worth $21.00! For the Watercolor class I will bring: a 6-pack of Twinkling H2O watercolors for each person taking the class (and they can take these packs home with them), watercolor paper, brushes, water containers, vinyl table covers to handle any errant drips (although all of the paint is water-soluable), watercolor boards to work on, and low-tack tape. Each person taking the class should bring a heat-gun if they have one. For the Fleurish box class I will bring: a Fleurish box kit for each person, distressing inks and metallic distressing sprays, vinyl table covers, instructions on how to assemble and distress the kit as well as hints and tips on adding your photos, art and ephemera to make an altered album of your own. Each person taking this class should bring fast-dry paper glue and a heat gun in you have one. Both these classes are so much fun - and my most popular classes - I know you'll love to host one yourself. So far at the studio, these are the only classes we would like to offer as Stay-cations because we can do them at the studio or at a home without getting messy. Our other classes---the calendars, altered books, shoe-painting, newspaper painting, pop-can art and balloon sculpture are either too big or too messy to bring to your house (and sometimes both!) but are being offered at the studio - which is also a very fun place to Come, Play & Get Away.

Hope to see you either at our Come, Play & Get Away classes at the studio or our Stay-cations at your home.
If you have any questions, want more details, or want to sign up for some classes - don't hesitate to call us at the studio: 402-234-3099 and we will get back to you ASAP.

The Garden Gallery

Here is a short note from the owner of the Garden Gallery, Michele Minnick:

THANK YOU! We are beginning to 'wind down' at the Garden Gallery, so what better way to say thank you than to "WINE DOWN".....Please join us: Saturday, June 14th from 1 - 4. Enjoy a day at the Garden Gallery....pick up a few extra flowers at great sale prices! Also, wonderful art is still a must for any garden....our artists have been hard at work this season and the Garden Gallery has some of the most unique garden art. Make it a day and join the PROGRESSIVE GARDEN PARTY! Before (or after) you visit us in Gretna, cruise on into Louisville and stop at Feathers, Coop-de-Ville, and 5th Street Studio Fairy Wood. Get your card stamped at each of the four locations and be entered in the drawing to win a very "cool cat" planter worth $250.00 See you Saturday! Michele, The Garden Gallery - 11514 S. 168th Street, Gretna, NE 707-0056

Just a note from me here - but yes, its the very same 168th street running straight out of Omaha.....so if you would like, and don't mind the 'windy dirt road adventure' you can just take 168th straight South. Or.....drive south out of town to the junction of 370 and I-80, exit and turn right (west) and drive a short distance to 168th, and then turn South. Either way, its close and easy to get to. See you Sat! Jen

The Garden Gallery

Where is it, you ask?? 11514 S 168th Street...... Hwy 370 & 168th Street....
Part of the June 14th Progressive Garden Party. Michele (the owner) will be serving some
wine and offering some great Sale prices on bedding plants and potted plants and offering some
great garden "art" creations....

5th Street Studio will be serving free Lemonade in the Fairie Wood...we all can't be serving wine or spirits, you girls won't be able to drive home... Bring your cuttin scissors and play with a pop-can
making a pop-art flower....

Feathers is all gardened-up and lookin soooo cute - and they'll be hosting the first ever FREE PLANT SWAP - (dig up those "run-aways & over-growns" and bring em on down) Of course, Coop-de-Ville always has the best in shopping.

No matter where you start or where you finish - get all 4 locations to stamp your registration entry for the CAT PLANTER... Good Luck - this kitty will look good in any location in any garden.

See you Saturday 9-5 .... just a few miles down the road.

Saturday, June 14

For less than a gallon of gas you can have a Garden Adventure including 'Wine down the Season' at the Garden Gallery in Gretna 168th & Hwy 370(approx. 2 miles from the junction of Hwy 370 and I-80) which includes their end of the season garden plant sales, then on to Louisville (12 miles from I-80, whether you are coming from Omaha or Lincoln) for Feathers' 1st annual FREE Plant Swap! Bring your 'volunteer' plants from your garden to exchange with another gardener to fill out the empty spaces in your garden bed. Then, on to Coop-de-Ville for a refreshing iced latte and garden art (along with spectacular shopping).......wait....there's one more stop......on to 5th Street Studio Fairy Wood to make 'Pop-Art' flowers from recycled pop cans with Melody (this project is a complete blast, and the dresses are soooo cute!). You can also sit and make a wish in the Fairy Chair - and remember to bring any old keys you may have so you can tie them in the Fairy Wish Wreath in the garden. When you visit all four locations, get a special stamp to present at the studio to be eligible to win the gorgeous cat garden planter worth $250.00 which you see pictured here. What a fun way to spend a day for less than a gallon of gas - and maybe make a few new friends and learn a few new things along the way. An absolutely perfect 'Girls Get-Away Day' is closer than you think. Hope to see you there - Jennifer
Any questions you may have about this 'progressive garden party' on Saturday, June 14, please call us at the studio.

Garden Glories

I know all of us have been working diligently (despite the weather) to try and salvage some of our gardens from all of the wind and rain - and hopefully all of you haven't suffered any damage - and here are some photos of the flowers we have managed to grow this year....Enjoy. Luckily the Fairie Wood is protected by all the trees and the studio enough to still look great. Maybe it's because we have enticed some actual fairies to live there and look after the fauna :) I like to think so. Anyway - have a great night out there everyone!

Posys

I've been making posies since 1988. Yep! I know, that's a long time.
I started with dried flowers with bead/button embellishments and sold quite a few over the years and then I didn't use the dried flowers and used copper wire petals with beads and/or buttons in the center - adding calyx leaves or corsage leaves and ribbons - sold a lot of those too.
Then I made some flowers with huge bead centers and fabric petals and wound up in a similar class in Chicago making the same thing only with stitching and a sewing machine. About five years ago I even did a friends wedding flowers (a small wedding) in beads from old 60's & 70's jewelry. Wish I had some close-up picts. of those flowers. The wedding was fun fun and everyone loved the crazy "out-of-the-box" bouquets and boutioneers. I'm NOW doing posies with pop-cans and glitters and beads. I'll post a picture soon. Today, I even made a Brides Bouquet as a sample for my niece's upcoming wedding.

See ya in Louisville, Melody

Art Art Art

Here's some fun things we have been doing down here at the casbah......the watercolor and the mermaid are mine (Jennifer) and were just some fun projects I was playing with - and the flowers are Melody's....and she has come up with some even better designs since I took these photos. I know all of you want to learn how to make her awesome botanicals - she is coming up with a class for them as we blog....stay tuned superfriends! Joyce has been doing some weird and wonderful things with foam ribbon, and also sanding a lot of furniture...hmmmm...wonder what that's all about. I am sure we will be having some new artwork to post from all of us before too long.

Raining

Yes, I know!! It's raining and who wants to go to a Fairie Wood in the rain. ?? Well?? Today I walked the wood path and even though it was wet and rainy It was a little magical. I do love the rain and how it makes everything all clean looking and how it makes everything grow. Watering with a garden hose is ok but never makes things grow the way rain does. The daisies are all abloom and the hostas are growing and the little seedlings of hollyhocks are peeking their heads above the soil. Tomorrow, if the rain lets up - I'm going to plant a little terrarium with a little stick house for any new fairies that have heard about the wood and want to move in.

Today, I worked all day on a new altered book sample for the new class - and tomorrow (after the fairie terrarium planting) I'm going to work on the "pop-art" class samples. Maybe even make a banner of the new pop-art designs for the Fairie Wood. Both the altered book and the pop-art classes are a great way to re-cycle stuff from home - part of that "goin-green" thing. Hope to see all of you in the classes and havin some fun.

Fairie Wood

Hello everyone! Hope you had a nice, relaxing Memorial Day Weekend - and no damage from the wild storms which blasted their way through.
Our Fairie Wood is up and running - and a very nice place to come, relax and comtemplate, well, whatever......Keep us in mind when you would like to have a picnic-basket lunch yourself or with some friends.
We also have our new class schedules - come on down and see what's going on! We are having trouble emailing our class schedule - so if you would like one and can't come down, email us your mailing address and we will send you one the old-fashioned way. Here are some photos of the Fairie Wood - and the Fairie chair in which you can have your picture taken. There's a Fairie ring which you can tie on an old key and make a wish, so remember to bring some old keys. Last Thursday I held a bead/watch-making class and met two new friends - and their watches turned out fabulous! I love love love to see the things everyone else can create...it truly inspires me to keep being creative myself.

See you at the Wood, Jennifer

ARTflea

Here is an update on what went on at the first annual ARTflea market/swap at the studio:
We had some absolutely awesome vendors - and I know you can read my mom's post below - met some truly kindred spirits. Let me introduce everyone to the women who made the ARTflea so fun: Roxanne owns the Cosmic Cow on Havelock in Lincoln and brought some beautiful fabrics and fibers - and showed us how to do sun prints. They are an absolute blast to make, and I think they can be pretty addictive....never know what will turn out on those little beauties! Donna had some wonderful flamingos, prints, vintage photos and ephemera. Mandy and Angela from Springfield, NE own Glassy Chicks and create wonderful works of art in glass which they fashion into art plates, pendants, earrings, rings, coasters and bowls. You can see some of their designs in the picture here. Martha, from Lincoln, makes the most fabulous papers and hand-marbled silks you have ever seen, and her friend Jan (also from Lincoln) creates the handmade beads you see in these photos. The marbled papers in the photos are some of Martha's work. Amazing - and very inspirational!! Judy owns a shop called Gatherings in the Haymarket in downtown Lincoln - and has all kinds of wonderful things there. If you need any materials for whatever you are creating (vintage books, baskets, handmade candles, rug-hooking supplies, the list goes on forever) chances are Judy has it. Mom is coming out with a whole workshop full af gourd-art that is truly astounding, and Joyce is finalizing her Crocheted handbag patterns so all of you can finally learn how to make the cool bags she has designed. As for myself, I demonstrated little watercoloring techniques with the Twinkling H2O paints on Saturday, and bead-making on Sunday.
I want to thank all our ARTflea vendors for coming down to the studio this last weekend to share with all of us the beautiful works you create! It was wonderful to meet you all - and if any of you reading this blog out there in cyberspace want to meet any of these amazing and inspiring women - give the studio a call and let us know. There was also an unsung hero present for the entire event, both Saturday and Sunday named Amy. A wonderful woman, very creative, charming and talented. She donated her time and energy to help out during the ARTflea - set up, tear down, help everyone, and lend a hand with all the loose ends which come with any event. Thank you, thank you, thank you Amy!! Stay tuned for more photos of the new Fairie Wood which we just opened at the Studio.........hope to see you there!

New Bestest of Friends

How do I express the absolute joy I have from last Saturdays ARTflea and all my new friends. I just love all the ladies that came (picts next) My little ole heart has been just racin'. Not just because they had the best of "flea-stuff" to sell but because we were all "singin-the-same-song". This creative life is like a great big sister-hood for me. We're all out-there (somewhere) and now we're beginning to gather together. I can hardly wait until we can all get together and play with our glue, papers, scissors, paints, books, brushes, crayons, needles, ... I'm just sooooo excited. All that stimulation from talking to all my new best friends has put my little brain in overload and have been thinking of some great new projects for the studio-- and I want just everyone to come and play. Our new class schedules are available-but I've been thinking (oh,no!! has it come to that??) that there are some new things I'd like to do this summer. So, to know what they will be,,,, just keep looking here on the blog. I'd like to mail out each time, but we all know how expensive that gets. So, call or check back here.
OOOhhh! I'm just soooo excited.

A lot of firsts happened today - and if you missed it, then you really missed out on some great deals and meeting some great people. We will be at the studio tomorrow from noon until 4, with different vendors and different demonstrations - so it's not too late to come down and see the sights. Feathers, Coop de Ville, and the Louisville Art Gallery's THROWN and BLOWN show will also be going on as well. We also christened our new Fairie Wood with tours and free lemonade to kick off our new picnic-in-a-basket lunches. These will be by reservation only (402-234-3099) so we can accomodate you and your entire group. The wood is darling and so much fun to sit and daydream in over your picnic - and maybe even see a fairy of your own.
